MILWAUKIE DOG WALKING SERVICE
Milwaukie dog walking service is reliable, fast and professional. Take away the worry for your pet while you are away from home. It happens to all of us, as pet owners, our day is running late, we get stuck in traffic and we barely have enough time to take our dog outside for a potty break. Or, there is a sick family member and we can't get out for our dog's usual walk . We may have a high energy breed that needs a supplement to the exercise we give them to help them burn off their energy. We can help provide the walk your pet needs. Take away the worry for your pet's happiness. Our service can provide care when you have a busy day, a long day at work or want to sneak out of town for a while. Our caring service can provide the attention your dog needs. We can take them out for a potty break, a short walk, a brisk walk around the neighborhood or a hiking adventure that releases their inner wild side.
Typically you should allow for your dog to have minimum of three opportunities for a bathroom break a day. It may be more frequent for the young dog or senior dog. A dog may be able to hold it for a 12 hour period, but it is very bad for their health and can lead to urinary tract problems. Puppies need very frequent breaks with the general rule of thumb being that a puppy can hold it for as many hours as she is months old, plus one. So and example would be a three month old puppy with one added would be every four hours. Here are some commonly asked questions and their answers about a dog's need for exercise:

How much exercise does your dog need?
Vets generally recommend 30 minutes to 2 hours of exercise each day. These sessions can be broken up into segments. If you notice any signs of pacing, restlessness, excessive barking and licking your pet is likely bored and needs more exercise to meet their needs.
The right amount of exercise for your dog will keep them mentally stimulated, and in the best condition for their health.

- High energy dogs are in the hunting, herding and working group and they will need 30 minutes of vigorous activity during their day in addition to the 2 hours suggested.
- Medium energy dogs can include the Akita, Alaskan malamute, American Eskimo dog, Bull terrier, Corgi, Shar-pei, Chihuahua and Dachshund.
- Low energy dogs include Pugs, Basset hounds, Chow Chows, Great Dane, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Greyhound and Pekingese. These low energy dogs still need daily physical activity and mental stimulation and vigorous activity 3 times a week to keep up their physical health.
I have an energetic dog and I am not energetic. What can I do?

Why is a walk so important for a dog?
Mental stimulation is important for your dogs health. There is a saying that "an active dog is a good dog." A dog's sense of smell plays a large part in this as it uses a large part of their brain. Those stops to sniff the tree, actually give them a wealth of information. In fact, you could say, that we use sight to view our surroundings and dogs use their sense of smell. They “read” with their nose. They can detect some compounds at parts per trillion. That would be like us being able to smell a quarter teaspoon of sugar in an olympic size pool! The walk your dog takes helps him use that sense and keeps him happier and enriches his environment.
Constant Dog Barking
This is a concern for many dog owners. Dogs bark for a variety of reasons. It is a natural behavior. Sometimes the barking can become persistent and constant. You can help your dog to bark less with several different methods. Consulting your Vet or a trainer before trying any of the suggested methods from popular websites is always a good idea.
Web MD has an article on understanding why dogs bark that I found interesting. Here are two points I took note of.
Shouting stimulates your dog to bark more because he thinks you’re joining in. So the first rule is to speak calmly and firmly, but don’t yell.
A tired dog is a quiet dog. If your dog barks when alone, tire him out before you go. Take a long walk or run, play ball or take a trip to the dog park before leaving.

How can I keep my dog active in the cold and rainy weather?
Nose Games
Scent work is very tiring for your dog as it uses a lot of their brain. Most dogs love to sniff, it’s also very satisfying for them when they do this activity. Here is how you can teach them the game. Have a companion hold your dog's collar or put them sit and stay. Hold up a delicious smelling treat and walk several feet away. Place the treat on the floor and come back to your dog. Then after giving them a moment, give a command such as "search". It won't take much encouragement to have them run and go eat the treat.
After repeating this a few times, you can "hide" a treat in a very easy spot. Return and again give the command to "search". You can progressively hide them in harder places and even hide multiple treats. Eventually, you can really ramp up the fun factor by having your dog in another room while you hide the treats!
Round Robin Recall
Have several family members or friends go into different rooms or floors of the house. Each has a good treat and a really fun toy. Take turns calling the dog from one person to another with a fun greeting at each of the locations. This uses a good amount of energy and is fun for everyone.
How cold is too cold for your dog?
Each dog is different and the breed, size and age play an important role in how they respond to the cold.
Here are some factors that can affect your canine's ability to brave the cold:
Coat type
Breeds of dogs that have very think, double layered coats are the most cold tolerant. The attributes they have been bred for help them thrive in cold weather. Then you have the dogs with exceptionally thin coats, they can suffer the most in cold weather and need protection.
Size
A small dog has more skin in comparison to their volume and this allows them to lose heat faster than a larger dog.
Weight
Body fat is a good insulator for keeping your dog warm. Some of the thinner, more muscular dogs get colder faster.
Age and Health
Very old dogs, dogs that are sick and the very young can not regulate their body temperature as a healthy dog. These dogs will require more protection.
Another factor, in determining the effect, the temperature will have on your dog is the actual weather conditions. The wind chill factor can set up a dog to be colder than a bright, cold sunny day. If the day is wet your dog will feel the cold much more. Icy conditions can cause pets paws to become painful. If your dog is very active during a cold day they stay much warmer than if they are not active.
Most dogs should be fine until the temperature gets to 45 degrees fahrenheit. Always monitor your pets on cold days. Look for signs of shivering, whining or holding up their paws from the ground. If they start showing these behaviors it's time to take the fun inside.
